I am just finishing a novel that is set in 1987. It’s a fun crime mystery that has been helping me through my workouts for the last few days. What is interesting about the book is that there are very few references to the technology we take for granted. No internet, no googling, no cell phones. It’s crazy, the characters actually use pay phones. (What’s a pay phone anyone under 25 may ask)
The reason I mention this is that technology has changed our world so drastically and in such a short period of time. Today most of our kids are walking around with what is basically a seriously powerful computer in their pockets that allows them to communicate with anyone around the world, to send pictures and videos, the device gives others access to our kids in our homes. Powerful technology that could pose a danger to our families.
Ben Halpert is a guy who recognizes the need to give parents the resources they need to not only teach their kids how to be safe when they are on line but also how to use technology responsibly, to make sure they are not using technology to hurt others, to make sure they are not breaking the law in the way they are using technology. He created his web site SavvyCyberKids.org to give parents the resources they need to meet this challenge.
